CD/DVD ROM choice

The choice between regular CD ROMs and DVD ROMs is another budget concern.

CD DVD ROM The main difference between these two is, a CD ROM only reads regular installation CD’s and Audio CD’s, while the DVD ROM can read all CD’s and you can watch movies too.

If your budget has allowed for a larger monitor or flat-panel display, having a DVD ROM might be a nice feature.

Another thing to consider is backing-up or saving your data. After you have owned your computer for awhile, you will eventually have a rather large digital library. Odds are that if anything happens to your library you will be one unhappy camper.

Having a CD R/RW or DVD R/RW can be a life save when it comes to protecting your valuable data. What are the differences you ask?

Well, the R means writeable (you would think it would be a W) and the RW means the unit can write and erase data, then write on the same disc again.

The difference between CD and DVD is the amount of space available for storage. A regular CD can hold 700 megabytes, that’s actually a pretty fair size, while a DVD can hold around 4 to 8 gigabytes. As you can see, the DVD can hold a lot more information.

Final word: Having a DVD lets you lean back and watch a movie now and then, and it gives you more recording power.
