Choosing a Printer
Hey, not a lot to go over here. Choosing a printer is a fairly simple subject to handle.
I am pretty sure that you are not looking for the corporate network laser printer that handles collating and binding, and if you are, why are you reading this manual.
Let’s break this down to the easy part:
Laser printers are great, they print fast and the newer ones have great quality. But when it comes to a budget, laser printers are not cheap, especially when it is time to refill the toner.
Ink jet printers rule the market right now. Very affordable, and ink cartridge prices are definitely lower than toner refills for laser printers.
The new inkjet picture printers are extremely popular as well and won’t cramp your budget too much.
A word of advice when choosing a printer:
Test out how long time it takes from you tell the computer to start printing and until the printer actually starts to print!
Let the salesperson demonstrate it: I recently bought a Canon inkjet printer: While having a very attractive price, it can take up to nearly a minute before the trash starts the printing! Very irritating...
Also ask what capacity the inkjet cartridges have: How many pages, approximately, before they run dry?
You see, some printers have a favorable price, but the inkjet cartridges cost money. For my Canon printer, I usually buy cartridges two at a time, so I won't need to go back to the shop so soon. Again: Very irritating.
Also avoid printers with multiple color ink cartridges: The girls in the house have one with separate cartridges for red, blue and yellow: Hazzle x 3!
Select a printer with one color cartridge, and one black cartridge.
Just ask questions and ask for a demonstration: You are the customer, and since you are taking my crash-course, you probably know a lot more about computers than that sales person, anyway...
