Connecting to the Internet
You're going nowhere if you're not connecting to the Internet. Most likely, you are reading this from home anyway, and as such you already have a connection.
Whether you are going for simple internet communication such as sending an email here and there or if you want the fastest multimedia experience you can get out of your machine, choosing the right method of connecting to the internet can make or break your personal experience.
For the sake of keeping everything simple here, there are basically two ways to connect to the World Wide Web. The original least expensive method involves using a modem. With all the major companies competing for lower prices you can choose the High Speed option for just a couple more dollars.
Let me explain the difference between connecting to the internet with a modem and using the other high-speed alternatives.
Connecting to the internet using a modem is commonly referred to as Dial Up access. Your computer has a special card inside called a modem. This special “modem” card has a plug on the back of the card allowing you to attach it to a phone line. This method of connecting to the internet is fine for sending and receiving email and for some limited internet “surfing”.
The newer high-speed alternatives are blazing fast compared to the old Dial Up connection. Most areas have two options to choose from. There is a DSL service and a Cable service.
The DSL service is usually provided by your Telephone Company and works using your existing telephone line.
The high-speed Cable service is provided by your local cable company and works using your existing cable line.
For your high-speed connection you will need what is called a Network card or NIC in your computer (unless it is not included on the motherboard).
This network card will allow you to connect your DSL or Cable modem to the computer for the high speed experience.
And today, with all the high-volume unformation we send and receive (images, soundtracks etc.), the high-speed experience is really a must to have.
