The computer's Hard Drive
Picking the right hard drive, or harddisk, is an important part of building your computer. And you must have one.
The hard drive of your computer is where all your programs and data are stored when you turn the computer off. Without it, the system won't work. No chance.
Today’s programs require much more space than they used to, and with the explosion of MP3 music, movies images, you can never have enough storage for your computer.
If you are on a tight budget a good starting size for your harddisk is about 20 gigabytes.
This will be enough room for the operating system (Windows XP) and that leaves a fair amount of room for extra applications (programs) and files that you might create yourself.
If you have the extra budget, you can get one of the larger 200 or 300 gigabyte harddisks available. Keep in mind that the more data you have, the more data you risk losing.
Just for the fun of it: Inside the harddisk are two major components: The rotating disk, with a recordable surface much like the old-day tapes, and a moving arm with one (or more) read/write head(s).
As for rotation speed: The higher, the faster you will be able to start new programs, search and navigate on your harddisk. A very good speed is > 5400 RPM.
Never open your hard drive: It will be destroyed the moment you open it. It is not meant to be worked on that way.
