Build 4:
The Power Supply

Since all computers need power to run, we have to install the power supply.

If you want the power switch on the front of your case to actually do what it is supposed to, you will have to plug in the front Header cable. Some times these are connected to one block and sometimes there will be several different sets. These connectors are usually labeled fairly well, as is the motherboard where they are connected.

If we want the machine to come on when we push the power button we are going to have to install the power supply. That’s the big box with lots of wires.

Fortunately for us, power supplies can only be mounted to the chassis in one position. Once you get the screw holes aligned you are ready to go.

Now let’s get the power attached to the motherboard. The newer style motherboards and power supplies come equipped with an ATX connector like the one shown here.

This ATX connector has beveled edges, so inserting one of these the wrong way is near impossible. Just like our AGP video card, this plug may need a good amount of force to ensure that is properly connected.

Finished result above.

We can now move on to the next Build article.
