Software you need

Here is an overview of the most basic software you need in order to make your computer run and do something useful.

I put everything together but nothing is happening!

Once you have made it to this point you need to decide on an operating system. The operating system is the very first software you need: It is what makes your computer work in front of your eyes.

Your best bet would be to go with the tried and true Microsoft Windows XP. Look for the "Home" edition: It is much cheaper, and contains all you need for an operating system, anyway.

While there are other versions of Windows still available, the newer XP (short for eXPerience) works very well.

Microsoft Windows XP comes with a web browser: Internet Explorer, and an email program: Outlook Express. Other built in programs that may be useful include WordPad for creating basic documents such as letters, and there is even a very handy Movie Maker for editing your home movies.

Lots of other stuff is also included.

To install it, put the CD you received into your CD player, and follow the instructions: It should start up automagically.

If these basic tools are not enough, you can always install more software depending on what your needs are:

For creating advanced documents you may want to consider Microsoft Word, and for handling your finances there are several programs, like Microsoft Excel, available to help balance your check book and take care of all your online banking needs.

I advice you to get Microsoft Office (Again, the "Home" edition).

Both these packages can be found at TigerDirect.

By now you have probably come near the end of your budget. Have no fear; the internet is loaded with online stores like TigerDirect.

These little virtual shops usually have great deals on software you need. Another great option is to scour the internet for the newest open-source packages. Open Office is a good starting place. With an office suite comparable to the ever popular Microsoft Office you may like the choice.

And for a variety of needs, you may check out www.download.com. You can search and find heaps of free and low-cost software over there. I have used them with good results, several times, for free.

I highly recommend computer parts and other electronic products AND software from:
