What kind of computer?
What kind of computer do I want?
This is actually a trick question. Well, not a trick question, but at least a multiple part question.
The major deciding factor on what kind of computer you end up with depends on your budget. We would all be happier with a $5,000 machine, but realistically, do you have an extra $5,000?
Let’s start with the simplest solution and work our way up. You can build a fairly decent computer on which you can “surf” the internet and send/receive email for a couple hundred bucks. Sure it won’t be blazing fast but it will accomplish enough for the beginner. You can always start here and upgrade later.
Deciding on what kind of computer, the next step up from here is the Word Processing machine. This machine is only a small step up from the Internet machine.
Just add some more memory (512 Mb) and you can now use Microsoft Office or Open Office and create some really nice looking documents (personalized certificates for the grand kids, neighborhood news letters, and flyers), or even start working on your eBooks.
The next step up from the Word Processing machine will be the Gaming machine. This upgrade will require a really expensive video card and the biggest hard drive that money can buy. A ton of memory (1 Gb, that is 1024 Mb) will be needed too.
If you are considering a machine of this caliber you will have to spend some extra money on the motherboard as well. For our use, this would be overkill, but your grandchild will be very pleased :-)
When deciding on what kind of computer, I'd say: Go for the middle: It will be more than enough for the average user, and better than many off-the-shelf products.
